An important service announcement to all Eachday account owners:

Over the past several months, you may have experienced sporadic interruptions in Eachday's service. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.

To better keep our users informed, we would like to answer these 3 questions: 1) "Why has my Eachday account been intermittently down?", 2) "What are you doing to fix it?", and 3) "How will you prevent this from happening again?"

1) "Why has my Eachday account been intermittently down?"

The cause is related to our design. When we created Eachday, we designed it to address our own personal need for better memory preservation - a solution designed around the contextually meaningful passage of time, rather than the fragmentation of separate albums. A key aspect of our design was Eachday's unique Memory Sorter, which allows users to upload unlimited full resolution files with a single drag & drop, and then watch as everything falls in place, automatically organized in time.

This convenient "Go ahead! - Just dump it all in!" organizing feature -- still not found in any other related service, is the cause of Eachday's sporadic performance today. All of those batch uploads over the years, combined with thousands of free trial accounts, have accumulated to a point of unsustainability, which cannot be reliably supported by our current infrastructure.

2) "What are you doing to fix it?"

We have taken 2 temporary actions while starting on the larger changes that will ensure Eachday's longevity in the long term, as follows :

Temporary Actions:

  • As of August 4th, uploading has been disabled. Disabling uploads will ensure that all accounts will remain accessible (viewable) without further downtime, while we implement the required changes through November 2011.
  • No premium subscribers are being billed nor have been billed for over 6 months.

Changes Currently in Process:

  • Eachday will become a by-invitation-only service. Meaning - those that don't already have an account will not be able to sign up without recieving an invitation from a friend or family member with an existing Eachday account. (New sign-ups have already been disabled)
  • "Free-for-Life" accounts, and the banner advertising that went with them, will no longer be a part of Eachday's offering.
  • A free trial period will remain for invited users that create new accounts, but these free trial accounts will be deleted if not upgraded to a premium account (after multiple notifications).
  • We will begin deleting all the abandoned / inactive trial accounts that have accumulated over the years, after an attempt to contact each account owner.
  • Lastly, we will be implementing a new billing system, and subscriptions will be an incidental monthly fee (annual subscriptions will no longer be offered). All current Eachday subscribers will eventually recieve a request by email to re-enter their billing information into our new system, if they choose to continue using the service.

3) "How will you prevent this from happening again?"

Once finished, the changes described above will successfully bring Eachday to both a state of reliability for its users, and a state of cost sustainability for its creators.

We thank you for your understanding, and please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this transition might cause, namely - the short term disabling of uploading to accounts. Since its beginning, Eachday has always been a "project of the heart" for us, and regardless of whether it has 300,000 users or 300, we are dedicated to its preservation and longevity.

With warm regards to all the Eachdayers out there -

The Eachday Team
